Rental terms & conditions.

The agreement you sign when you rent a van from us, plus a plain summary of the parts that matter most. Last updated 19 July 2026.

The short version

What you actually need to know.

The full agreement is below and it governs the rental. This table is the part people ask about before booking — deposits, cancellation, mileage and the fees that can appear afterwards. Nothing here is hidden in the small print.

Key rental terms — Legends Car & Van Rentals, 204 Hindry Ave, Inglewood CA 90301. Current as of 19 July 2026.
TermWhat applies
Minimum age25, for every driver on the agreement.
LicenceA valid driver’s licence. A regular California Class C is enough for a 15 passenger van — no commercial licence needed.
InsuranceYour own, covering the full value of the rental vehicle. We do not sell insurance and none is included in the rate.
Payment to bookA non-refundable deposit of $100 or 25% of the rental, whichever is higher. The remaining balance is due 72 hours before pickup.
Security hold$500 on rentals of 1–3 days, $1,000 on 4 days or more, and $2,500 if the van is dropped off anywhere other than our Inglewood lot. Released after the vehicle is inspected, typically 1–7 business days.
CancellationFree of the balance if you cancel more than 72 hours before pickup — the deposit is kept. Inside 72 hours the full rental is due. There is no refund for returning a van early.
Mileage300 miles per rental day. Additional miles are $0.25 each.
Where you can driveAnywhere in the United States. The vans may not be taken into Mexico or Canada, on unpaved roads, or on a track.
FuelDiesel only, returned at the level you received it. Every van in the fleet is diesel; filling one with gasoline causes damage that runs to $25,000.
Late return$100 per hour past the return time on your agreement.
Cleaning$75 to $4,750 depending on what is needed. Smoking or strong odours: $400 to $4,750. The vans are non-smoking.
Roof clearance$5,000 for damage to the roof or the roof-mounted air conditioning unit, regardless of your insurance. Watch your height in car parks.
TollsUse a personal transponder or a cash lane. Using an automated lane without one costs our $9.95 daily administration fee plus the toll.
Traffic finesThe fine, plus a $25 administration fee for each one we handle.
Lost key$750 minimum, more for some key types, plus delivery.
Downtime$399 per day if the van cannot be rented while damage from your rental is being repaired.

Anything unclear before you book, call or text 888-329-1898 and ask. It is a great deal easier to answer a question now than to argue about a charge later.

The agreement

Rental agreement terms and conditions.

Renter responsibility and acknowledgements. Last updated 19 July 2026.

1. Nature of this agreement

This agreement is between Legends Car & Van Rentals (“Legends”) and you, the Renter. Legends rents the vehicle identified in the rental agreement to you on these terms and conditions. Legends gives no warranty of merchantability and no warranty that the vehicle is fit for any particular purpose.

2. Who may drive the vehicle

Only drivers listed on the rental agreement as authorised drivers may drive the vehicle. No other person may drive it except in an emergency, as permitted by law. Every authorised driver must be at least 25 years old, hold a valid driver’s licence, and carry full insurance covering the total value of the rental vehicle. Legends may require further qualifications at the time and place of rental, and may charge a fee for additional drivers.

3. Rental period and returns

Charges start when you take custody of the vehicle or at the time stated in the rental agreement, whichever is earlier. Taking the vehicle earlier or returning it later than stated may incur additional charges. Late returns are charged at $100 per hour.

The vehicle must be returned in the condition it was received, ordinary wear excepted, to the return location named in the agreement. Failure to return it when due, or extending without our permission, results in additional charges. Legends may recover the vehicle without demand and at your expense if it is illegally parked, appears abandoned, or is used or obtained in breach of the law or this agreement, and will not be liable for damages resulting from that recovery.

4. Responsibility for loss or damage

Regardless of fault, the renter is responsible for loss of or damage to the vehicle, ordinary wear excepted. That includes the cost of repair up to the value of the vehicle, loss of use and related revenue, diminished value, towing, storage and impound fees, and related costs. If the vehicle is not returned for any reason, including alleged theft or vandalism, you are liable for its full value and related costs.

At the first sign of mechanical trouble you must stop driving and contact Legends immediately. If you smell oil, diesel or burning, stop somewhere safe and call for roadside assistance; in the case of fire, call the fire department first, then call us. No repair or replacement of any part may be carried out without our prior written approval, and you are liable for unauthorised repairs and any damage they cause. Report any accident involving property damage or injury to the police immediately, notify us immediately, and send a written account within 24 hours.

5. Prohibited use

Any use of the vehicle prohibited here breaches the agreement and makes you responsible for our resulting damages, costs and legal fees. The vehicle must not be:

  • taken outside the United States — it may not travel to Mexico or Canada;
  • driven off road, on unpaved roads or on a race track, or used to tow, push or for driver training;
  • used to transport people for payment, unless that is your regular licensed business, you have told us, and Legends is named as an additional insured on your policy;
  • used in a speed test or contest, or driven in a wilful, wanton or reckless manner;
  • obtained from Legends by false or fraudulent means;
  • used to carry hazardous or explosive substances, or overloaded or improperly loaded;
  • left unattended without removing the keys and locking the doors and windows;
  • driven when doing so will cause damage — warning lights on, a flat tyre, steam from the engine.

6. Repossession

Legends may repossess the vehicle without demand or notice if it is used in breach of the law or of this agreement, or if it reasonably appears abandoned or is not returned at the agreed date, time and location. You grant Legends the right to enter premises under your control to recover the vehicle and agree not to interfere. If the vehicle is recovered or left anywhere other than the designated return location, you are responsible for the cost of returning it, including a driver’s time, lodging and meals, and for legal fees associated with recovering it.

7. Payment

A non-refundable down payment of $100 or 25% of the rental, whichever is higher, is taken by credit card to hold the reservation. If the booking is made less than 72 hours before pickup, the full balance may be taken at that point. Otherwise the remaining 75% is due 72 hours before the rental and no later than the pickup date.

A security hold is placed on the card before the rental: $500 for rentals of 1 to 3 days, $1,000 for 4 days or more, and $2,500 where the drop-off location is anywhere other than 204 Hindry Ave, Inglewood CA 90301. It is released once the vehicle has been inspected and no further charges apply, typically 1 to 7 business days. Where charges do apply — cancellation fees, additional miles, extra days, damage, parking tickets, tolls, toll violations or downtime — you authorise Legends to charge the card on file. Additional mileage, fuel and damage are calculated after the vehicle has been retrieved and inspected, and an invoice follows by email within 2 to 7 business days.

8. Cancellation and refunds

Cancellations must be made by telephone and email at least 72 hours before the pickup date, in which case the down payment is forfeited. Cancelling inside 72 hours makes the full balance of the rental due. Delivery, transfer and one-way fees, and any flights booked for our drivers, are non-refundable. Legends reserves the right to cancel a booking before or during the rental. There is no refund for a vehicle returned early. Legends does not refund for manufacturer-based issues with the vehicle.

9. Other charges

If you direct charges to a third party or a credit card, you warrant that you are authorised to do so and guarantee the obligation if they do not pay. Charges not paid when due, or paid by a cheque returned unpaid, attract a late payment fee and a $50 returned payment charge each time.

You are responsible for all amounts arising from your rental, including: time and mileage as computed from the odometer; taxes, permits, service and equipment; excessive wear; keys locked in the vehicle; and lost keys, at a minimum of $750 and more depending on key type, plus delivery.

Tolls. Some tolls do not accept cash. If you use an automated express or toll lane without a personal transponder, you pay our daily administration fee of $9.95 plus the toll, for each day of such use. To avoid violations and fines, use a personal transponder, use cash lanes, or plan a route without tolls.

Fuel. The rate does not include fuel. If you did not buy fuel from Legends at the start and return the vehicle with less than you received, a refuelling charge applies at the specified rate.

Fines and downtime. All fines, penalties, court costs and out-of-pocket expenses we incur are yours unless caused by our fault, and each traffic or parking fine we handle carries a $25 administration fee. You are liable for income lost from bookings on a vehicle damaged during your rental, at a downtime fee of $399 per day, counted from the agreed return date until the vehicle is repaired and back in service. Charges may be applied to the card on file after the invoice is issued, since the amount depends on when we receive figures from third parties such as repair shops, dealerships, the DMV, roadside assistance and insurers. Refusing payment, including disputing a card charge, attracts the applicable fees and interest.

10. Accidents, theft and claims

Report any accident, theft or vandalism to Legends immediately and, where directed or required, to the police in the jurisdiction where it happened. Deliver to us promptly any papers you or an authorised driver receive relating to the incident. You and all authorised drivers must cooperate fully with Legends and its insurer in investigating and defending any claim, including naming your insurer; failing to cooperate may void liability coverage and any limitation on your responsibility for loss or damage.

11. Personal property, indemnity and limits on liability

Regardless of fault, Legends and its affiliates, employees and agents are not responsible for loss of or damage to personal property left in or about the vehicle or on our premises; you waive all claims for such loss and assume the risk of it.

Legends does not indemnify or insure you or any other party against claims for bodily injury or property damage caused to a third party, and you are solely liable for such claims. You will indemnify Legends against all losses and claims arising from an authorised driver’s use or possession of the vehicle, from your breach of this agreement, and from your breach of applicable law. Legends is not liable for indirect, special or consequential damages — including lost time, income, lodging, personal expenses or benefits — arising from the vehicle, a mechanical breakdown, or a failure to honour a reservation. Our liability to you is limited to the amounts received from you.

12. Insurance

Every designated driver must provide proof of valid insurance covering rental vehicles. Legends may accept a renter’s cover provided through a credit card, or company insurance covering all additional drivers. Legends offers no insurance of its own.

Regardless of coverage, the renter is responsible for all damage and costs incurred during the rental. It is the renter who contacts the insurer to open a claim and manages reimbursement. Legends may charge the renter’s card for the full cost of repairs and damage, within 7 days of providing a detailed estimate.

13. Mechanical breakdown and roadside service

Stop driving at the first sign of mechanical trouble and contact Legends immediately. Do not authorise or attempt any repair without our prior written approval; you are responsible for unauthorised repairs and the damage they cause. If you smell oil, fuel or burning, stop safely and call for roadside service — we will inspect the vehicle and arrange a replacement where appropriate. In case of fire, call the fire department first.

Where a breakdown or malfunction occurs, a refund or partial refund is due only if Legends cannot provide a comparable replacement vehicle for the remainder of the rental period.

14. GPS and electronic surveillance

Some vehicles carry electronic technology such as GPS tracking devices, used to trace lost or stolen vehicles. Legends may also use the tracking system to assist you during the rental in the event of a breakdown, or at your request.

15. Additional terms

Any change, modification or waiver of a term of this agreement is void unless set out in writing signed by you and Legends at the start of the rental, and expressing an intention to amend this agreement. If any part of this agreement is held void, illegal or unenforceable, the remaining parts are unaffected.

Late returns. Your rental starts at the pickup time on the agreement. Late returns are charged at $100 per hour.

Height and clearance. Damage to the roof or the roof-mounted air conditioning unit on any van is charged at $5,000 in addition to other charges, regardless of your insurance coverage.

Fuel type. Every van runs exclusively on diesel. Using any other fuel can cause damage running to $25,000 or more. Stop the vehicle immediately and contact Legends if any fuel other than diesel is put in.

Cleaning and odour. A vehicle not returned in the condition it was received incurs a cleaning fee of $75 to $4,750 depending on what is required — food debris, glitter and spilled fluids are the usual causes. Our vehicles are odour-free and non-smoking; returning one with signs of smoking or strong odour, including cigarette butts, ash, burn marks or food odour, incurs a fee of $400 to $4,750 charged to the card on file.

FAQ

Questions about the terms.

Do I need a deposit to book a van?
Yes. A non-refundable down payment of $100 or 25% of the rental, whichever is higher, holds the reservation. The remaining balance is due 72 hours before pickup. A refundable security hold is also placed on the card: $500 for 1 to 3 days, $1,000 for 4 days or more, and $2,500 if the van is being dropped off away from our Inglewood lot.
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancel more than 72 hours before pickup, by phone and email, and you lose only the down payment. Cancel inside 72 hours and the full rental balance is due. There is no refund for returning a van early, and delivery or transfer fees are non-refundable.
Can I take the van to Mexico or Canada?
No. The vans must remain in the United States. Within the US there is no radius limit — Las Vegas, Arizona, the Pacific Northwest are all fine — but crossing into Mexico or Canada is a breach of the rental agreement.
Do you provide insurance?
No. Legends offers no insurance of its own, and none is included in the rate. Every driver must show proof of their own insurance covering the full value of the rental vehicle; cover provided through a credit card or a company policy can be acceptable.
What fuel do the vans take?
Diesel, every one of them. Putting gasoline in a Sprinter causes damage that runs to $25,000, so if it happens, stop the vehicle immediately and call us on 888-329-1898 rather than driving on.
What happens if I bring the van back late?
Late returns are charged at $100 per hour past the return time on your agreement. If you know you are running behind, call us — extending the rental properly is almost always cheaper than returning late.

Questions before you book?

Ask now rather than later. We would far rather explain a term than surprise you with it.
